Disease Testing

We are committed to the health of our herd and test our animals before they leave, and do yearly Johnes and CAE testing on our does. Since we milk test all of our does, they will be Johnes tested by their milk, and CAE by blood serum. Johnes will be done in the Spring, and CAE in the Fall before or during breeding season, but before kidding. All of our bucks came from a reputable breeder with 20+ years of experience and disease testing their herd. We will have them all tested as well, but that proves to be more difficult for me since I pull bloodwork on my own. Every animal that goes to a new herd is disease tested before they leave by us or our local Veterinarian for their CVI (kids are an exception, but from tested dams).

CL (Caseous Lymphadinitis) we test for on case by case basis. The blood test is unfortunately not as accurate, although we do both blood and culture when any strange abcesses present themselves, and at the request of homes getting a new herd member from us. I am happy to share that we continue to be CL free in our herd. Salivary Gland Abcesses are quite common and they look nothing like a CL abcess. There are tons of information on what they look like online, and the differences between them. Even so, we test those for good measure. I recommend everyone do their due diligence in learning themselves so that they can be prepared if the problem ever arises. We have been blessed to never have had a case, and we are grateful to have on call Veterinarians and a local lab to take samples to. 

The Lab

For any and all testing we use the New Mexico Department of Agriculture Veterinary Diagnostic Services, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They hold Accreditation and are a member of the NAHLN (National Animal Health Laboratory Network). We personally deliver all samples.
