Our First Buck Collection
It has been a long time coming and we are finally at the point of wanting to truly preserve our genetics for years to come. I never imagined that we would become this committed to our breeding program, but when you truly love the animals and the bloodline you are working with, it just makes sense! Sometimes we lose animals unexpectedly and if you dont have a backup plan it can really feel like a punch in the heart with the loss. I don't want to feel like that ever again, which is why we decided to collect our bucks. Not only is it insurance, but it is also a safe way to share our genetics. As long as we are financially capable and have the bucks we like, we will make the effort to collect them. This is why managing the herd correctly is so important to us. If our numbers and overhead costs are managed properly, we can make the investments necessary to preserve and continue proving the lines we have. It would also insure our dairy's need to purchase anymore animals, keeping that cost down as well. In order to become a fully functioning but self reliable dairy, preserving these genetics through cryogenics is paramount.
I try to look at all of these new endeavors as fun parts of our working farm that will pay off in the long run.
